BAJA Espana ARAGON

FIA International Cup for Cross-Country Bajas (round 3)

A one-two-three for BMW/BFGoodrich in Spain

Victory on this weekend's Baja Aragon went to Spain's Nani Roma and his new co-driver Michel Périn. The pair's BMW X3 CC/BFGoodrich headed home a one-two-three finish for the X-Raid squad, with Stéphane Peterhansel and Filipe Campos following in second and third places.

The German X-Raid/BFGoodrich team had entered no fewer than five X3 CC diesel prototypes for the third round of the 2009 International Cup for Cross-Country Bajas, with a line-up comprising Roma, Peterhansel, Chicherit, Campos and Da Maia. All five cars were competing on the BFGoodrich All-Terrain tyre, winner of January's Dakar.

The former factory Mitsubishi driver Stéphane Peterhansel, who was was making his debut with BMW, won three of the first four stages but brake trouble put him out of contention for a possible maiden victorywith his new team. X-Raid's other Frenchman, Guerlain Chicherit winner of the 2009 Cross-Country Rally World Cup, dropped more than two hours with electrical trouble.

His team-mates' misadventures played into the hands of Nani Roma who went on to secure his second Baja Aragon victory after that of 2005, as well as his first success in the BMW X3 CC/BFGoodrich and with his new co-driver Michel Périn.

Portugal's Filipe Campos rounded off the all-BMW/BFGoodrich podium, while Nicolas Misslin came fourth in his ex-works Mitsubishi Pajero diesel/BFGoodrich. Jean-Louis Schlesser finished inside the top-10 with his new Buggy/BFGoodrich despite dropping a big chunk of time on the prologue stage.

Dominique Bravy (BFGoodrich rally-raid technician): "The BFGoodrich All-Terrain tyre performed well on this weekend's varied terrain which was relatively narrow and dusty. Temperatures didn't exceed 30°C in the afternoon, but Peterhansel's overheating brakes led to a problem with a valve which forced the crew to put on a spare wheel Misslin's prototype was equipped with BFGoodrich Rock T/A tyres, and Jean-Louis Schlesser was using the BFGoodrich Baja T/A. There were no problems with these tyres either."
