The tyres produced by BFGoodrich for the Intercontinental Rally Challenge and the different national championships are termed ‘customer competition’ tyres, which is to say they are for competition use only and available through the sales network. Such tyres are technologically sophisticated products which benefit from more than 30 years of experience in the discipline.
Asphalt tyres
Dry weather asphalt tyres must be capable of withstanding the considerable forces generated by hard braking and fast cornering speeds. Although outright performance is a priority on asphalt, the drivers also look for consistency, as well as versatility in unsettled weather. The BFGoodrich g-Force Profiler combines consistency, performance and versatility.
Gravel tyres
There are essentially three categories of loose surface rallies (low-wearing, medium-wearing and very rough), so BFGoodrich proposes three types of compound (soft, medium and hard) to cover the full spectrum of conditions. On the loose, rally tyres need to be strong enough to soak up impacts against rocks and over potholes, but they must also provide precise steering response over the faster portions.
Snow tyres
The IRC does not include any winter fixtures but many of BFGoodrich’s partners compete in Scandinavia where the championships include rounds that take place entirely on snow and ice. Approximately 380 studs are glued into the tread blocks of each tyre.
Size: 225/40-18
For dry asphalt. Available in two different compounds (A01/soft, A10/hard) according to ground temperature, the abrasiveness of the stage surface and the total competitive distance to cover. The pattern of these tyres can be ‘re-cut’ for use in damp conditions.
Size: 225/40-18
For damp or wet asphalt. A single compound (soft). Its pattern can be ‘re-cut’ to enhance its water clearance capacity.
Size: 225/40-18
A siped pattern for icy asphalt. The tread pattern can also be equipped with one or two rows of small studs depending on the conditions.
Size: 195/70-15
Available in three different compounds (4/soft, 5/medium and 6/hard) according to ground temperature, stage length and the type of surface. The pattern of gravel tyres can be ‘re-cut’ in case of mud.
Size: 145/65-15
These studded tyres are narrow in order to increase the pressure on the contact patch to help the studs bite into the ice. Each tyre is equipped with around 380 studs (stud specifications can differ depending on the regulations enforced in each country). The g- Force Ice GA is a maxi-snow tyre. The asymmetrical pattern of the GE optimises lateral grip.
